952186_21478682aDe technologische workshops streven ernaar om vrouwelijke middelbare scholieren en studenten in contact te brengen met onderzoekers in gebieden die gerelateerd zijn aan de luchtvaart industrie om het debat omtrent onderzoek als een mogelijk carrière pad en omtrent toekomstig onderzoek te koesteren.




Technological clinics TU Delft

Technological Clinics were conducted at the Delft University of Technology on 26 November 2014, and 3 December 2014. The events were organized in collaboration with “TeamVoorlichting”, which organizes events for high school students throughout the year. Team Voorlichting promoted the event through the Delft University of Technology Website and contacted a number of high schools around the country. In total, 29 high school students participated in each event.

Each event followed the same format. The first presentation of the day provided the high school students with an overview of the study program for the Bachelor and Master degrees. The second presentation focused on space engineering, and was given by a professor from the Space Department. The professor explained the basic principles behind rocket propulsion and satellite orbits. Next, the students attended a first year “Dynamics” lecture, which aimed at showing the high school students the teaching style at the University. Before the lunch break, a presentation was given by Elisabeth van der Sman, a member of the IN2SAI project. The presentation highlighted the possible career paths for women, and showed the various activities that are being organized specifically for female aerospace students (like the IN2SAI project and Women with Wings). The presentation served as a stimulus for female high school students who are considering a career in aerospace engineering.

The afternoon program started with a lecture on the basic principles of aeronautics. Subsequently, the students were shown around the facilities that they would be working with if they decided to do research in the field of aerospace engineering. The tour of the Faculty’s main facilities included the dynamic flight simulator SIMONA and the flight hall, including material labs. Finally a workshop was organized in which the group was divided in teams. Each team got a set of tools, materials, and devices. With these materials the teams were asked to construct an aircraft capable of flying the longest distance. The workshop ended with a small competition to determine the winning aircraft. This workshop gave students some practical experience with working on a small project and offered the opportunity to experience the process of designing, testing, and improving their design based on the test results.

In summary, the day aimed at increasing the high school students’ interest in the field of aerospace engineering by showing them possible career paths, attending aerospace engineering lectures, visiting test facilities, and participating in a small workshop. During the day we paid special attention to bringing female high school students into contact with aerospace engineering and showing them opportunities in this field. In particular, by having two female tutors and a female lecturer we hope to have increased the interest of the female high school students who participated in the event.
